| Kursbeschreibung | This course introduces students to the history and culture of Black Americans from the past to today. It offers a broad overview of key developments, movements, and cultural changes in African American history over the past 500 years. Topics include a variety of different aspects such as the transatlantic slave trade and slavery in the United States, the Reconstruction era, the Civil Rights Movement, the idea of the American Dream, the U.S. prison system, and contemporary movements for racial justice such as Black Lives Matter. Students will learn about important figures and stories through texts, music, films, popular culture, and art that express the experiences and voices of Black Americans. Together, we will explore how Black Americans have continually shaped and redefined the nation’s social, political, and cultural life. Guiding questions include: What does freedom mean? How have Black Americans fought against injustice? How do hope, creativity, and community help people rise above oppression? The goal of this course is to help students understand the history, struggles, and achievements of Black Americans - from the time of slavery to the present day - and to reflect on how this history continues to influence the United States and the wider world. |
